Why cold start is the sorting key
It is the one number you experience every single time. A three second start does not sound like anything on paper and it is the difference between opening an app and being annoyed by it.
Package size drives most of it. Heavier builds start slower, unpack larger, and cost more on a metered connection, which matters a great deal north of sixty degrees and not at all downtown.
The provincial apps
Every province runs a crown gambling operation with its own app: OLG in Ontario, PlayNow through BCLC and shared with Manitoba and Saskatchewan, PlayAlberta under the AGLC, Espacejeux from Loto-Québec, and the Atlantic Lottery product across the four eastern provinces.
The Ontario one is the one people search for by name. OLG is the province's own operator, it predates the private market that opened alongside it in 2022, and its app carries lottery products the private lobbies do not have at all. It is a genuinely different thing from everything on this board rather than a competitor to it.
None of them are here, and that is deliberate. This board is the private operators we can install, deposit into and withdraw from under one repeatable routine. Measuring a crown corporation the same way would be comparing two products built to answer different questions.

Mobile slots, specifically
An app lobby and a browser lobby usually serve the same titles from the same studios, so the difference is not the games. It is whether the game holds portrait and how fast it loads on a phone.

iPhone, Android, and the bit in between

Searching a game name plus the word app

That matters because game-name-plus-app is exactly the search that finds something nobody wants installed. If a page offers you a download for a single game, it is not the studio's.

What is the OLG app?
OLG is Ontario's own government operator, which makes its app the province-run option rather than one more private lobby. Every other province has an equivalent and each is named on the province pages.
It is not on this board, and if you searched the name expecting a head to head, the honest answer is that in Ontario the two sit beside each other rather than against each other. Nothing stops you holding an account on both, and plenty of people do.
Is there a single best casino app in Canada?
Not one that wins on everything. The app that opens fastest is rarely the app that pays fastest, and the app with the biggest lobby is usually the biggest download.

What is the best iPhone casino app?
On iOS the useful question is which operators have a real App Store listing at all, because Apple's rules for real money gambling are stricter and some brands ship Android only.

Which sports betting app should I install?
Different job, different board. A sportsbook app lives or dies on bet slip behaviour, in-play latency and whether cash out works on a moving price, none of which a casino lobby has to worry about.

If a name is not here, it means we have not measured it, and that is all it means. We are not going to publish a figure for an app we have not opened.
Is it safe to install a casino APK from a website?
A file downloaded from a link rather than a store has had nothing checked and can be modified by whoever is hosting it. An APK asking for permissions a lobby has no use for is the obvious warning sign.
Some operators genuinely do distribute Android builds this way because of store policy, so the file being outside Google Play is not automatically wrong. Getting it from the operator's own domain rather than a mirror is the part that matters.
On iOS there is no equivalent. If a page offers you an iPhone install outside the App Store, close the page.
Do I need the app, or is the mobile site fine?
The site is fine for playing. The app is better for the boring parts: biometric login, session limits in settings rather than five clicks into an account page, and a balance that survives a lock screen.
The measurable difference is the cashout. Across our board an app typically cuts two or three taps off the same withdrawal you would do in a browser, and a browser tab forgets you when the session drops.
