When it stops being fun

What is gambling psychology?

Gambling psychology is the study of why people keep playing when the maths says stop. The short answer is variable reward: unpredictable payoffs sustain behaviour far better than predictable ones.

The longer answer is that most of these effects are known to the people designing the products, and are built in on purpose.

The four big ones

Variable reward. A payoff you cannot predict is more compelling than one you can. This is the oldest finding in the field and slot pacing is built on it.

Near miss. Two jackpot symbols and the third just above the line reads as almost, and the brain responds much like it does to a small win. Reel strips are weighted to produce these more often than chance would.

Losses disguised as wins. Stake C$1 across twenty lines, win C$0.40, and the machine plays a celebration. You lost sixty cents and the feedback said you won.

Sunk cost. Money already lost feels like a reason to continue, which is exactly backwards, and it is the engine of chasing.

Where they live in an app

Push notifications timed to your usual session. Balance shown in coins rather than dollars. Deposit buttons available from every screen and the withdrawal flow buried behind five. An offer card sitting between you and a confirm button.

We count the last two on every app teardown on this site because they are measurable. Three taps to your money versus eleven is a design position, not an accident of engineering.

What helps

Time-based limits work better than money-based ones for most people, because sessions extend before stakes do. Playing with the balance displayed in currency rather than credits helps too, where the app allows it.
