Odds and prices
What is a live betting option?
Live betting, or in-play, is a market that keeps trading after the event starts. Prices reprice every few seconds as the game moves.
It is the fastest-growing part of every sportsbook app and it carries the widest margins in the building.
You are always behind
Your stream is delayed. Cable runs a few seconds behind the venue, an app stream on cellular can be fifteen or twenty seconds behind, and the book's data feed is close to instant.
So the price you are tapping already knows something you do not. That is not a scandal, it is the structure, and it is why in-play prices are wider than pre-match ones.
Why the slip bounces
Submit a live bet and the book revalidates the price at its end. If it moved, you get accepted at the new number, asked to confirm, or rejected outright depending on your settings.
Rejection rate is one of the things we watch on the sportsbook apps in our list, because an app that bounces one slip in five during a busy period is a different product from one that does not, no matter how good the lobby looks.
Cash out is a live market too
The cash out figure on an open bet is the book buying your position back, priced with its margin on the far side. It is convenient and it is never generous.
Take it when the bet no longer matches why you made it, not because the number is glowing at you. The button is styled to glow.
